Themed on the billionaires coastal paradise, The Hamptons, the Light House Boutique Suites emits a light of luxury guiding the discerning traveler towards an oasis of calm and culture in the heart of the Winelands.
Sporting signature red glasses, General manager Darrol Buckton offers a courteous greeting, complete with a glass of bubbly and freshly picked local strawberries, that instantly revives even the most frazzled traveler.
The Light House is a bastion of good taste that has been tastefully designed by Darrol Buckton and Hendrik du Toit, a creative duo that have lavished attention on every nook and cranny.
Each of the five rooms are uniquely styled. All enchant the eye whether you choose the cool, clapboard chic of the Hampton suite or The Mayfair’s elegant, urban glamour. Every manner of comfort – from the Egyptian cotton linen to the dupion silk drapes, ensures profound comfort. Every room has a private balcony with inspiring views across the Drakenstein mountain range. Inviting art books are considerately placed on bespoke coffee tables – I was delighted to find the latest issue of TheTatler to accompany my Molton Brown muscle soothing bath soak.
As well as orchestrating the decor, Darrol and Hendrik are the most impeccable hosts. Discreet but attentive, they regale you with tales of Margot Fonteyn (Hendrik was previously a ballet costume designer) as they cater to whims you didn’t even know you had.
Nature provides a cocoon around The Light House: The scent of jasmine wafts on the air; Iceberg roses bloom abundantly alongside a springy lawn leading to the stunning sixteen meter azure swimming pool that is elegantly edged by a neatly trimmed Leylandii cyprus hedge.
The food at The Light House is as sublime as the setting. Over dinner, by the time dessert arrived, we had run out of adjectives to apply to each course. Both our main courses – fillet and kingklip – were sweet, succulent and cooked to perfection.
Next day, the dining room was freshly decked out in blue gingham table mats, the perfect backdrop to a delectable breakfast – a feast of fruit kebabs, all manner of fresh pastries, cheese and figs. Best of all was an eggs benedict that I would challenge anyone not to write home about.
If you manage to venture beyond this secret paradise, you will find that Paarl offers a variety of attractions. From the Afrikaans Language Monument – The Taalmonument, which celebrates the diverse threads of the Afrikaans language, to the Strooidak church, one of the oldest and most historic churches in South Africa, Paarl. Less pretentious and a little rougher round the edges, Paarl has an unfair tendency to get overlooked in the well-trod path to Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. But as its name suggests, Paarl is indeed a pearl of a place.
For both Capetonians longing for the lap of luxury or overseas visitors wanting to be pampered, I’ve no hesitation in recommending The Light House.
